Sunday last 18th November there were thirty Volunteers, including the five Transition Year students, out for the weekly litter pick. The amount of bags collected were eleven of litter and five of recycling.

During the previous week there were a number of volunteers litter picking in the Town Centre area each morning and on the road to Poulavone. A further two bags of waste and one of recyclables were collected. In an extra pick outside the designated area, two Volunteers came back with a bag of rubbish each.

The main works for the week to the 18th November were in the allotment site.  First job of the week for the group was sorting waste to maximise the recycling of glass, cans and plastic bottles.  Next they turned the compost in the first green bay. This compost will be turned every two to three weeks. Preparations with the ground were advanced in preparation for the new larger poly-tunnel which will replace the two smaller ones we have had for the past number of years. This new investment will be a significant help in the planting schemes we are involved in throughout the seasons. The workers also got out and about to collect leaves in a number of areas around Ballincollig.

Collections were made from four estates with nine bags of leaves sent to compost. The Council again had the road-sweeper in and they also cleared a truckload of leaves and branches from tree maintenance works. Residents took the initiative and cleared leaves in their own immediate areas.  Almost all the leaves have fallen now so when the remainder are finally cleared that should be it.

Rubberised mulch was spread around the bases of the trees along Main Street. This should reduce the time spent picking weeds.

On Saturday 17th five Volunteers turned up to install the winter planting on the railing baskets. This was completed in a couple of hours.

If you are interested in joining us any Sunday, come along to Quish’s SuperValu West End where we meet at 11.00 am for our weekly litter pick.
