Last Sunday was a dry morning and thirty Volunteers, including five Transition Year students, gathered for the weekly one hour litter pick. Most areas of Ballincollig were covered. Three new Transition Year students from Colaiste Choilm, Orla, Aoife and Anna joined this group today. We hope they enjoy their time with us during the coming school year. Litter was not too bad throughout and a total of twelve bags were collected, four of which were separated for recycling.

During the previous week four volunteers were out in the Town Centre on the Bank Holiday Monday and they collected three bags.  Over the rest of the week a number of volunteers picked litter in the Town Centre area each morning and on the road to Poulavone. A further three bags were collected, two of waste and one of recyclable materials.

The removal of bindweed continued with the group moving on to the Beech hedging on the northern edge of the Old Macroom Road at Coolroe.  They were also involved in sorting waste. Works were carried out on Flynn’s Road. The bedding area including footpaths and kerbs, from Westgate to Innishmore junction, were cleared of leaves. Fourteen bags were picked up, however, due to the high winds the area is once again covered in fresh leaves.

Collections were made from four estates and four of the six bags collected were sent to compost.  Verge and boundary cutting, by a local landowner, was most welcome. As a result, visibility has increased in the area, making it safer for road users during these dark evenings.

Wednesday saw creatures of varying sizes travel through the estates for several hours collecting treats while sometimes offering a trick or two. A special ‘thank you’ needs to go out to all the GHOSTS and GHOULS  who took their treat wrappers home instead of littering their route.

We are always looking for new volunteers to help us with our weekly litter pick. If you are interested in joining us any Sunday, come along to Quish’s SuperValu West End where we meet at 11.00 am.
