Another Busy Sunday

On Sunday Morning we had 32 volunteers plus 8 Transition Year Students out for our Weekly Litter Pick.

The area we covered stretched from Carrigrohane near the old Post Office to Classis and also included The Regional Park and also the steps from the rear of The Westgate Fountain to Ballincollig Community School and everything in between.

In total 8 bags of litter were collected which were segregated on Monday morning.

In addition we collected 4 bags of litter and 1 bag of glass as a result of litter picks by our volunteers during the week.

We adjourned to The Plaza for a very welcome Cuppa and cake.

Another Busy Sunday

It’s beginning to look a lot like🎄

On Sunday morning Cork City Council Staff were busy on Poulavone Roundabout as they have started putting the lighting on the tree at the centre of the Roundabout in preparation for Christmas. The lighting last year was spectacular and really enhanced the Roundabout and entrance to Ballincollig. We look forward to seeing the results of their hard work and planning in the coming weeks.

And then they were gone!!!

On Sunday Morning 8 Transition Students under the guidance of Brigid, Denis and Henry removed all the summer planters at the western side of the village. They were like a well oiled machine removing them all and cleaned up the footpaths afterwards. The planters throughout Ballincollig certainly brightened the community and provided a great source of food for pollinators.

All the planters throughout Ballincollig are planned, watered, fed and constantly deadheaded by our volunteers. We are appreciative of the funding we receive from Cork City Council towards the planting.

To put it into perspective what is involved just in relation to the watering and feeding of the planters. We watered the pole and window boxes 30 times and the planters at Eastgate were watered 17 times from June to the end of September. In total we used 43,500 litres of water the majority of which was taken from our stock of harvested water in our allotment which is taken from the roof of Scoil Barra.

We spent 232 hours watering which equates to approximately 5 weeks work. Imagine if we had to pay someone to do this work !!!!

This does not take into account how many hours were spent dead heading the flowers.

We are already planning for 2025 and our winter planters will be put up in the coming weeks.

A huge Thank You to everyone who made these beautiful floral displays possible during the Summer.

And then they were gone!!!

Poulavone Roundabout in Autumn 🍂

Last Saturday one of our volunteers Alan spent 4 hours on Poulavone Roundabout doing an amazing job cutting back the shrubs in the beds. His knowledge made a huge difference and the Roundabout looked very well on Monday afternoon when Gay and the lads removed all the cuttings.

Now that the Summer colour has subsided we have a plan for the Roundabout for winter and Spring 2025.

Preparing for 2025 !!!

As part of our planning for the 2025 Planting Season when this year’s summer inserts are taken in we clean them all and wash them. So on Thursday morning Sunday and Keith washed all inserts that have been brought in so far to get them ready for sterilisation next week. All the wicks will also be washed and replaced if needed. They are then stored away until next year.

Tom and Ger brought in all the pole planters from Muskerry Junction to the Tradehouse.

The planters on the railings at Muskerry Junction will be removed by the Transition Year Students on Sunday Morning.
